“Delusion” on the fox
Nowadays, with the spread of trophy hunting for large animals, hunting for pests and fox in particular has faded into the background, and only enthusiasts of their work continue to engage in it purposefully. It’s a pity, because in order to get a beautiful fire, hunting skill and cunning requires no less than for prey, for example, a cleaver from a tower or an elk on a driven hunt, and in its beauty and entertaining fox hunting is simply unique.
Manxing fox hunting is based on the use of predator hunting instincts. The most common way to hunt is to lure a fox into a squeak of a mouse. The same method, perhaps, is most often described in Russian hunting literature, so I will not dwell on it separately.
However, there are several other methods used by our European colleagues in passion to get a crown, which few people know about. For example, in Europe, fox hunting is widely practiced using a decoy imitating the cry of a wounded hare, and there is also a very interesting method of obtaining red cheats, namely using artificial “snag” from fur. I would like to tell about these kinds of foxing. Predators (foxes and coyotes) hunting with stuffed animals are most common in America, where special attention has always been paid to pest shooting. It was from there that fashion came to hunt fox using a dummy.
The model itself, resembling a fur toy, is mounted on a movable pole of a small height, which is driven by an uncomplicated electronic mechanism. What a
should personify the scarecrow, is unlikely to explain even a professional biologist. Something like a rat, and something and a squirrel; colors are also made different: both light and dark, but, in any case, successfully attracts the fox. However, in our northern latitudes, the use of a fur model is limited by weather conditions: in the rain and snow, the pile on the stuffed animal becomes wet, and it loses its natural appearance, which the red-haired cheat does not fail to notice. In the dry weather, a dummy swinging on a pole with an electric motor in two modes – quiet oscillation, or frequent twitching – is very attractive for a predator curious by nature. A particularly successful hunt with such a manny device may be in the fall, when young and not very careful foxes from newly broken broods begin to hunt on their own. Such a hunt is most often carried out on the newly compressed fields in the morning and evening dawn, where foxes go to the mouse. Our European fellow hunters prefer, in parallel with the use of the cast, to periodically lure the fox with the cry of a wounded hare with the help of a special decoy, which complements the visual effect of the snag and attracts the beast even more.
Habitat. In America, the fox range captures the mainland north to the Arctic Ocean and the coast of the Bering Sea. The southern boundary of the range reaches the Gulf of Mexico, but the fox is not found in Florida and in the eastern parts of Georgia and North Carolina.
The bushes on the outskirts of the field or haystacks will be suitable as a place for the sit-up device; against the background of which the silhouette of a properly disguised and motionless hunter will be almost invisible to the beast. Naturally, as with other fox hunts, it should be remembered that she has a well-developed sense of smell, so you must clearly define the direction of the wind and always choose a place to sit down so that the wind will blow on the hunter. The deception should not be installed on the Chistina itself, since any beast avoids open spaces.
The hunt for predators with the use of stuffed animals is most common in America, where special attention has always been paid to shooting pests.
It is advisable to install a dummy next to some natural shelter for a fox – the edge of the forest, for example. The device is set not too close to the intended location of the beast (somewhere from 50 to 100 meters), so that the fox could not, unnoticed, see the stuffed animal and recognize the deception. The main goal is to lure the cheat from cover at least for a while, sufficient to make an aimed shot.
Having installed the model in the right place for him, the hunter settles in the backfill (preferably not further than 100 meters) and, having waited 15-20 minutes in complete silence, begins to beckon with a cry of a wounded hare. The duration of the first and subsequent “batches” of decoys, each hunter determines for himself individually. The main rule that should be followed when poking is the following: one should try to imitate as naturally as possible.
