Winter hunting in Astrakhan

The long-awaited winter has arrived in Astrakhan. For two days it was snowing, the ground and the trees covered themselves with a white blanket. The time has come for a real winter hunt.

In the morning after work I immediately went home, I was looking forward to the time when I could walk with a gun through the long-awaited snow. But by 9 in the morning all the plans had been interrupted by the snow that had begun; such snow threatened to cover all the tracks. Therefore, I had no hurry to have breakfast at home and without haste began to prepare for the upcoming hunt for a hare, hoping that I could manage to hunt normally. I went in with. Krasny Yar to his father-in-law, we agreed in advance that we would go together, he, me and his son Yura.

At the time when we left Krasny Yar, the snow had already stopped. We went to the village of Vatazhnoye near Krasny Yar. When we arrived at the place of hunting, the mood dropped when I looked at the snow. The picture was such that it was no longer clear when the tracks were left, at night or a day ago, because this place is located on a hill and there the wind and snow were probably stronger. But still the hope of a normal hunt still remained.

Not far from the car, we noticed hare tracks and went over them to find it. After about 5 minutes, I saw a hare running aside about two hundred meters from us. Then I was not lazy and went to see where this hare was lying. To my surprise, his bed was about twenty meters from our car in a small bush.

Without focusing on this situation, we moved further down the hill. And again they stumbled upon more or less distinct traces of the hare and also went along them, leading them to waste water. I stopped at the top, and Yura followed the trail, hoping that the hare would lie at the bottom of the water gondone in the grass. He did not have time to go downstairs, as I noticed a hare running away from us in the opposite direction. The distance was great, so I did not even think to shoot. When I went to see where he was, it turned out that this hare was lying under a small tree in a tuft of grass. And he ran in such a way that I could not see him until the hare ran off the tree for 50 meters, and from me to the tree was about the same if not more. Moreover, I did not think that he would lie there. As a result, it became clear that the hare today will not let a close distance.

I will not describe everything, since it will be too long, I will write further briefly.

I walked along two hares, but both times I ran across a running track, it is not known why, but the hare, going to the bed (judging by the track), started to run away from someone or something, in general, it does not matter. I also walked several times along the trail, but in the end my searches stopped due to the snow-swept trail. Then I finally reluctant to look for a hare today and decided to hunt pheasant.

We moved to another place, there was a meadow of hay and a couple of dried eriks, along which reed grows, that’s where I hoped to find a pheasant. I went through erik in the direction of the reeds, and my father-in-law and Yura went to the field to fetch hares. As soon as I crossed the Erik, and this is about a hundred meters from the car, I heard two shots, I thought that after all, someone was lucky today. Behind this Erik was an interesting place, and I thought that maybe there would be a hare and wanted to charge 00, as soon as I broke the rifle and took out the cartridges from the barrels, in twenty meters from me the partridges took off. And then my mood dropped completely. Around the reeds, I stumbled upon fresh pheasant traces that led to the reeds and I went over them, but going into the reeds, I realized that there was no point in going over them, because the reeds were tall and thick. Having passed the reed, and this is about a hundred meters I went out, and the true field, where I saw fresh traces of three wolves, apparently they were in the reeds and they were frightened by men or shots. I again charged 00 and a unit, I thought that if the hare was, I would shoot two zeroes, and if the partridge, I would shoot one. After passing the field, I did not even find the hare tracks, which surprised me. But, not reaching Erik, I saw the traces of partridges, and again I decided to reload with a small fraction, and as soon as I broke the rifle – they took off. I didn’t even understand how I folded my gun again and fired, but immediately realized that I shot 00, so I was shocked by this and didn’t shoot the unit a second time. But on the other hand, I shot down one partridge, which at least somehow lifted my spirits, especially since she was alive and tried to run away from me. She beat her wing and shot off her tail. So I had to kill her.

Then I met the father-in-law and his son and was surprised that no one had killed the hare. The first two shots were fired by Yura, but he didn’t kill them, and then, it turns out, he shot my father-in-law, although I didn’t even hear those shots.
